Business Startups

Starting your own business can be daunting but with the right help and the right ideas can lead to a successful venture and the freedom most entrepreneurs strive for.

We at M J Smith & Co believe a start up needs as much support as is possible. New businesses often fail because they have no one to turn to when the going gets tough. It does not have to cost a fortune either, we offer fixed fees and with that you get all the help you need.

We can help you with:

  • Deciding on the best entity to run your business, either Limited company, Sole trader or Partnership. Each of these has advantages and disadvantages and sometimes a combination can be very tax efficient especially if you are starting up from being employed and has early trading losses.
  • Discussing any banking needs and help with preparation of a business plan, cash flow projections, budgets, and trading forecasts if needed and deciding which bank best fits.
  • Completing registration with Companies House, HMRC, PAYE registration and company formations if you have decided to go for corporate entity rather than sole/partnership. This still needs HMRC registration and often PAYE if your employing staff.
  • Dealing with any company secretarial matters such as issue of shares or appointing Directors.
  • Setting up accounting systems for recording the businesses accounts, through either destop accounting software such as Sage or cloud based applications such as Xero or Quickbooks using  bank feeds.
  • Probably the most important part of the accountant/client relationship is the ongoing support once the business has started. Day to day support is essential and avoids many of the pitfalls a new business can face.

Human Resources

In today’s climate the need for professional HR help is essential.

As a client you will have access to one of the UK’s leading HR specialists through our Croner TaxWise fee protection insurance policy. This insurance covers professional fees arising from HMRC enquiries, compliance visits, VAT enquiries, interventions and disputes, a service that is both innovative and comprehensive. It means that we, your accountant, can carry out the work for the investigation at no cost to you. Our fees will be paid in full by the Croner TaxWise insurance. HMRC enquiries are often selected at random and even if your records are accurate and HMRC find no errors the fees can cost thousands. Any one that pays tax can have an enquiry.

With the field of employment law constantly changing, it can be challenging for businesses to keep a track of employee rights and also time consuming to keep policies and procedures up-to-date. Croner TaxWise can help with questions such as holiday entitlement, notice periods, managing poor performance, redundancies and dismissing long tern sick employees, to name but a few.

As part of our fee protection insurance you also get complimentary advice and help with any Employment Law or Health & Safety questions. Your HR department is just a phone call away.

Payroll | Auto Enrolment

With the introduction of RTI and now Auto Enrolment payroll has become an ever increasing burden on businesses, time consuming and burdensome, diverting energy and resources from the core activities of your business.

Even if you have only a few employees, you will make savings by engaging us to administer your entire payroll as Auto Enrolment and payroll must now be run as one entity. HMRC have implemented monthly fines for failing to submit the correct Real Time Information (RTI) at the correct time each month. These fines can run into hundreds of pounds before you realise that you have been penalised, as HMRC do not issue them for several months, by which time they have escalated.

Auto Enrolment is now compulsory for all businesses who have employees. The Pension Regulator can levy huge fines on Employers for not submitting the correct information to them within the limited timescales or for failing to have and Auto Enrolment scheme to offer their employees.

Our dedicated in-house payroll and auto enrolment department is here to help.

Typical costs are as follows:

  • £3.20 per payslip.
  • Monthly fixed charge of £30 under the new RTI scheme.
  • Auto enrolment setup and administration POA.
  • Free payroll setup cost.
